To fit lots of rows on screen in a Flex 3 data grid, you have to change the font size and the row height of the grid. For example, <mx:DataGrid fontSize=”8″ rowHeight=”12″></mx:DataGrid> But the preceding code causes the text in the grid to be cut off because the grid still has row padding that pushes the text down. To remove that padding, set the paddingTop and paddingBottom styles. For example,…

Some personal recommendations for Flash Builder: – Design View remains unused for most of my projects. I think this should be moved to a separate tool (Catalyst), and that Catalyst should evolve into a more serious tool that doesn’t crap…
As a result of being back in the “land of the coding” (see post: http://blog.flexmonkeypatches.com/2010/09/08/back-in-the-land-of-the-coding/), I should begin easily to accumulate content for blog posts. Case in point last week, when I spun my wheels for what was longer than I should have, over dumb assumptions or misconceptions or misrememberings regarding some aspect of Flex/Flash/AS3. I thought I would start a new series of posts meant to capture such dumb assumptions as a reminder to myself ad hopefully as a cache of useful tidbits that others can come across when they are struggling with things that just aren’t working as
This post is long overdue, and I want to personally apologize to Adobe for taking so long to post it. Adobe (Macromedia?) thrives on customer feedback, early, and makes a serious effort to prioritize on it whilst comparing to their … Continue reading →

Recently we announced an important technology partnership with SapphireSteel Software that will enable developers to fully utilize the .NET framework for Flash and Flex development. Previously, .NET developers were required to learn and use a second IDE, such as Eclipse, if they wanted to develop Flash/Flex applications. Now .NET developers can use their favorite IDE, [Read full post]
Well as a result of being back in the “land of the coding” (see post: http://blog.flexmonkeypatches.com/2010/09/08/back-in-the-land-of-the-coding/) , it is time to start up a new chapter in the Rubbernecker’s Review. Believe me, there has been a lot to look at over the last while since I last posted an episode….but there was far to much to completely review. I’ll just stick to my regular weekly format and post the interesting links from the past week: AIR install badge (from RIAgora) Air for Android: Geolocation (from The World In A State of Flex) Seminar Recording: Advanced P2P – Object Replication (from

The first half of 2010 has been kind of tumultuous for me. In March, Adobe and I parted ways. No more employee-employer relationship. However, this did not end my relationship with Adobe technology. Far from it. I took this as an opportunity to have a go at getting more involved in development with Adobe technologies, specifically, anything Flash Platform related. It was time to take my 9 plus years of experience from Allaire/Macromedia/Adobe and jump into a new phase. In my early years at Allaire/MACR, I was involved in the Coldfusion product as Senior QA. More recently (the past 7

Every Flash developer is facing security risks because of the fairly easy ways an Adobe Flash SWF file can be decompiled and reverse engineered. Without protection, anyone can easily reconstruct your SWF files stealing your work. I already blogged about Flash Thieve and SWF Protector as a remedy, but this time I want you to [...]

Four new projects and three updates this week (or so) in ColdFusion open source. Summer’s unofficially over and school is back in session. Football is back (college is what I really care about) and baseball is coming to a disappointing end (at least if you like the Red Sox). As you stare at the leaves that show the first signs of changing color, you might wonder, what does any of this have to do with ColdFusion and open source? Nothing. New Releases and Updates New Project: CFConsole ColdFusion from a Console Terrence Ryan created an AIR application that acts as
Were you having a tough time deciding between attending RIA Unleashed in Boston or 360 Flex in DC? Did your boss say the budget only fit one of the two? The best part is you can get all the pre-MAX good stuff at 360 Flex and then catch up on all the newly announced stuff from MAX at 360 Flex. Plus, you can’t beat the extra opportunities
Yesterday morning I got an email from fellow Adobean Danny Winokur in my inbox discussing the state of the union with respect to Flash on the mobile. The synopsis of the conversation went something like this.Flash Player 10.1 is now beginning to ship in volume on many smartphones. Many of you may have seen the attached full page Motorola ad which ran on Friday in the NY Times, the Wall Street Journal and USA Today. There are other similar ads being planned by major carriers and handset manufacturers. This is the culmination of years of co-development to migrate Flash (not

For a long time I’ve been meaning to try out the the IntelliJ CFML plug-in for two reasons. One of which, I’ve always heard really good things about the IntelliJ platform for editing Java, Groovy and Flex, and also because as a Linux based ColdFusion developer, my CFML IDE options are limited. So I decided I was going to get some work done on JavaLoader,to move it into a 1.0 F…
Adobe has posted a new device support page for Flash 10.1 (back in the “Flash Lite” days we had a similar page). I think you can count on Android to heavily populate this page over the next few months. Other device form factors, as well as OSP paterns may also spring up on here, as [...]

What is Chimp? Chimp is a simple component for doing role based permissions in Flex. It uses metadata and a generic ArrayCollection of permission strings to display the proper components for a given set of user roles. You can find more info about the project at: http://www.gorillalogic.com/chimp. Flex 4 Update Shortly after I posted Chimp in 2009, Adobe [...]
Not much of a surprise, but just because a device can run or be upgraded to Android 2.2, does not mean it will be supporting Flash, according to this article on phonescoop. It depends on some key hardware certification requirements being met (see below). Adobe confirmed to Phone Scoop in a call that though Android [...]

For whatever reason, my personal blog has much more traffic than PXL Blog. Maybe it’s the crazy YouTube videos? Or the shameless ramblings during the wee hours fixing bugs? Whatever the case may be, I figured I’d blog twice about Attest 3 being released today. If there’s anything I like more than writing a blog [...]

Had a stupid bug that cost me a lot of time so I figured I’d post the solution here in case others stumble onto the same problem. I had an app with a Horizontal List control and for some reason, Flex insisted on adding an extra item to my list whenever I added a new item to it? Strange. This only happened after I converted the project to Flex 4 and when I went back…
Harry Partridge created this new teaser for Starbarians, a Flash-animated project he’s been cooking, and uploaded it to his popular YouTube channel. While there’s no nudity in the short, YouTube nixed the video for being “too sexually provacative.” Luckily Newgrounds welcomed the short with open arms, and it’s already nearing 200,000 views. Last week I released the as3term project which is a simple AS3 Terminal application. This week as part of work on as3term 2.0 I’m publishing this simple AS3 syntax coloring Flex/Spark component. Actually I was inspired by my colleague Anirudh Sasikumar and his powerful as3syntaxhighlight library. My thought was to use in the first place it but [...]

As some of my fellow Flashers have pointed out today, there seems to (finally) be some movement on a much requested feature (with over 550 votes) for Flash: AEC Support (Advanced Echo Cancellation). It is the second most voted feature request – number one has more votes since seemingly because it has been overrun by Apple fanboys who complain about Flash’s poor performance on OSX. It hasn’t occurred to them that they should also talk to Apple abo…. err, ok sorry, I forgot that Apple does not enter into a dialogue with its use, let alone run a public bug
I already showed you two ways of editing Box2D environments with Bison Kick and simply using the Flash IDE. Today I’ll show you the most advanced editor at the moment: World Construction Kit made with Box2D C++ 2D physics engine compiled with Adobe Alchemy. The demos on the official site are really awesome and the [...]
Image via Wikipedia Most Web designers are perplexed when a client asks them to build a flash Web site and also optimise it for search engines. This is because more often than not, you have to choose between search engine optimisation and a flashy design. For the best flexibility and results, when it comes to [...]
Lee posted about the Galaxy Tab, which is one of many tablet form factors slated to support Flash Player 10.1 as they roll out into next year. Here’s a promo video. I love how they have learned that to beat Apple you need the “hip” and trendy factor. Still, until you actually start using a [...]
